Purpose not Performance
Purpose not Performance
I used to wonder what on earth God was thinking when He made me. Eventually I learned to stop asking such a question. I was told I had a purpose and it was up to me to seek God to find out what that purpose might be. It was difficult, to say the least. Eventually I gave up on trying to find my purpose as well as asking God the original question.
I was also led to believe if I did not maintain a certain standard of conduct and if I did not at least TRY to be the best I could be God would be disappointed in me. This was disturbing to me on many levels. The last thing I wanted to do then or to do now is to disappoint someone as awesome as the Lord.
I heard many sermons on how I should be and do to keep God happy with me. My concept of salvation was performance-based. My concept of my relationship with God was peformance-based. My acceptance of myself as God created me was performance based. I just about crashed and burned trying to be good enough to be accepted, let alone loved. I was a mess.
This book is about how the Lord set me free of all of that descructive and futile thinking. In the course of my counseling career I have come to learn I am, by far, not the only one struggling with these issues.
The Lord has led me into some freedom in this area. If He can accomplish it with me I know anyone who is open to Truth can find freedom as well.
The question is not so much about purpose as it is identity. Our identity is based on our relationship with the Lord. It is difficult to talk about purpose without understanding who we are as individuals. We’ve had teaching about being part of the Body of Christ, but when the question becomes weo we are as individuals it starts to become a bit fuzzy for most of us.
My Prayer for this book as it leads us into a place of Truth where we can stop the struggle and learn to simply be who we are created to be, to love the Lord with everything within us, to be available to His transformation work in us, and to walk out the path He has ordained for us to intersect with the works He has already prepared for us. It really takes off a weight and lets us come into a place of peace.
I hope you enjoy the book and, even more than that, I hope it helps bring freedom! Be blessed.
